Applications And Advantages of Polyurethane

Polyurethane (PU) was invented by Professor Dr. Otto Bayer in the year 1930 used to replace rubber. It is a very versatile elastomer or artificial rubber. Properties of polyurethane can be manipulated through chemistry, allowing them to take on a multitude of unique qualities.  Polyurethane appears in a large number of our everyday household items and machinery.

As given in Wikipedia, Polyurethane chemical is widely used in high resiliency flexible foam seating, rigid foam insulation panels, microcellular foam seals and gaskets, durable elastomeric wheels and tires, automotive suspension bushings, electrical potting compounds, seals, gaskets, carpet underlay, and hard plastic parts (such as for electronic instruments).

Polyurethanes or PU Chemicals are formed by reacting a polyol (an alcohol with more than two reactive hydroxyl groups per molecule) with a diisocyanate or a polymeric isocyanate in the presence of suitable catalysts and additives.

Advantages of Polyurethane when compared to other materials;

Polyurethane VS Rubber

  • Abrasion resistance is high

  • High cut & tear resistance

  • Superior load bearing

  • Thick section molding

  • Colorability

  • Oil resistance

  • Ozone resistance

  • Radiation resistance

  • Broader hardness range

  • Castable nature

  • Low-pressure tooling

Polyurethane VS Metal

  • Lightweight

  • Noise reduction

  • Abrasion resistance

  • Less expensive fabrication

  • Corrosion resistance

  • Resilience

  • Impact resistance

  • Flexibility

  • Easily moldable

  • Non-conductive

  • Non-sparking

Polyurethane VSPlastic

  • High impact resistance
